What to expect from fracture casting for a growth plate fracture

A growth plate fracture affects the softer area near the end of a growing bone. Depending on its position and stability, a clinician may gently realign the bone before applying a splint or cast. The cast supports the limb and reduces movement while the injury settles.

Follow-up is especially useful because the bone is still growing. Reviews may include an examination and imaging to check position and healing. The clinician will explain whether later checks are needed to watch the bone's growth and alignment.

Keep the cast clean and dry, and never place pencils, sticks or other objects inside it. Elevate the limb if swelling is present and encourage gentle movement of uncovered fingers or toes when advised. Keep the child or teenager away from contact play, climbing and activities that could damage the cast until cleared.

Check the skin around the cast edges and use only padding recommended by the care team. Keep every review appointment, even when the limb feels better.

Call the treating service promptly if pain is increasing, the cast becomes tight, wet, cracked or loose, or the child develops numbness, tingling, unusual colour, cold digits or trouble moving them. Get urgent help for severe pain with worsening swelling or circulation changes.

Ask how long protection is expected, which activities are allowed, when school or sports can resume, how the cast should be checked, and whether growth monitoring will be required.
