What to expect from fine needle aspiration for a thyroid nodule

You usually lie back while the clinician examines the front of your neck and cleans the skin. Ultrasound can help guide the needle into the nodule. The needle removes small cell samples, which are sent for laboratory assessment. You may feel pressure, a brief pinch, or the need to keep still. Several passes may be taken to obtain enough cells. The result may be benign, suspicious, malignant, or unclear, and your clinician will explain what the report means for you.

Tell the clinic about blood-thinning medicines, bleeding problems, allergies, pregnancy, and difficulty lying flat. Ask whether any medicine should be adjusted; do not stop prescribed treatment without instructions. Wear clothing that leaves the neck accessible.
