Finasteride reduces conversion to that hormone, which can help slow ongoing thinning in suitable patients. It does not restore every lost hair, and visible change is gradual rather than immediate.

A clinician may compare photographs, hairline changes, crown density, and shedding over time. Benefits generally require continued use; stopping can allow the underlying pattern of hair loss to resume. The medicine is not appropriate for everyone, including some people who are pregnant or may become pregnant because of handling and fetal-risk precautions.

Take finasteride exactly as prescribed and do not double a missed dose. Tell the prescriber about liver disease, other medicines, fertility plans, sexual symptoms, and changes in mood before starting. Keep review appointments even when shedding seems stable, because the plan may need adjustment or another hair-loss cause may need evaluation.

Do not share tablets. Pregnant people should not handle crushed or broken tablets. Keep a simple record of shedding, scalp symptoms, and any new sexual or emotional changes so these can be discussed clearly.

Contact the prescriber if you develop persistent sexual problems, breast swelling or a lump, nipple discharge, testicular pain, or marked depression, anxiety, or thoughts of self-harm. Seek urgent help for thoughts of harming yourself. A sudden patchy loss, inflamed scalp, or rapid shedding also deserves assessment because it may not fit the usual pattern.

Ask how your diagnosis was made, what improvement can realistically be assessed, when photographs or examination will be repeated, and which side effects should prompt a call. Discuss fertility and pregnancy precautions, alternatives, and what happens if you stop treatment.
