What to expect from fertility preservation for breast cancer

Your oncology and fertility teams consider the cancer type, treatment schedule, hormone sensitivity, age, ovarian reserve, partner preferences, and future family plans. A fertility specialist may arrange blood tests, an ultrasound, and a discussion of egg or embryo freezing. Medication can stimulate the ovaries, followed by a procedure to collect eggs. Embryos may be created with sperm from a partner or donor before storage. In some situations, ovarian tissue freezing or medicines intended to reduce ovarian activity may be discussed.

The fertility plan must fit safely around cancer care. Hormone-sensitive breast cancer requires particular coordination, and preservation may not be suitable for everyone. A stored egg, embryo, or tissue sample does not promise a future pregnancy, so ask about alternatives and emotional support.

Tell your oncology team as soon as having children in the future matters to you, even if treatment is already being arranged. Bring information about periods, previous pregnancies, pelvic surgery, medicines, and your preferred timeline. Ask how long preservation may take, whether stimulation can begin during your treatment planning, and how hormone exposure will be managed. Discuss storage arrangements, future use, donor options, and costs directly with the fertility service. Do not delay cancer treatment without a coordinated plan.

During ovarian stimulation, contact the fertility clinic for severe abdominal swelling or pain, repeated vomiting, breathing difficulty, faintness, or markedly reduced urination. Report fever, heavy bleeding, or worsening pain after egg collection. If breast cancer treatment symptoms or emotional distress become difficult to manage, tell your oncology team promptly so support and safe adjustments can be considered.
