What to expect from fat dissolving injections for submental fullness

Submental fullness is the padded area below the chin that can soften the profile. At assessment, the clinician checks the fat layer, skin elasticity, neck anatomy, and nearby structures. The injection pattern is mapped before the product is placed into selected fat. The treated cells are then processed by the body over time. A fuller or less defined appearance immediately after treatment can be caused by swelling, so early photographs are not a reliable guide to the final contour. Loose skin may still be visible if it is a major part of the concern.

Tell the clinician about swallowing problems, neck surgery, allergies, medicines, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any infection or irritation under the chin. Keep the area free from unapproved creams on the day of treatment. Follow the aftercare plan for cold compresses, head position, washing, and pain relief. Expect tenderness, bruising, redness, firmness, and swelling; these may make the jawline look temporarily less defined. Avoid rubbing, tight collars, and strenuous activity until the clinic says they are suitable. Keep review appointments so the response and skin laxity can be reassessed.

Call the clinic for rapidly worsening swelling, severe pain, spreading redness, heat, drainage, or fever. Seek urgent care for trouble swallowing, breathing difficulty, marked facial asymmetry, widespread allergic symptoms, or new weakness. If the chin or neck becomes increasingly hard, discoloured, or painful rather than gradually settling, ask for an examination before using massage or booking another session.

Ask whether the fullness is mainly fat or includes loose skin, how the injection area will be marked, how long swelling may affect speaking or social plans, and when contour changes will be reviewed. Ask what alternatives exist if the under-chin skin does not tighten as the fat reduces.
