What to expect from a falls prevention programme for osteoporosis

How the structures involved in Osteoporosis differ from normal

Short answer

You should expect an individual assessment, balance and strength exercises, practical home-safety advice, and a plan that progresses at a safe pace.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the programme is tailored

Osteoporosis weakens bone, so preventing a fall is part of protecting against fractures. A physiotherapist may review your walking pattern, balance, footwear, vision concerns, medicines, and the layout of your home. Exercises can include supported standing, leg strengthening, posture practice, and controlled changes of direction. The programme should respect existing pain, previous fractures, and confidence with movement; it is not a test of athletic ability.

Making practice useful

Wear stable shoes and use prescribed walking aids correctly. Practise only the exercises demonstrated, near a secure support when advised, and keep pathways clear of loose rugs, cords, and clutter. Improve lighting around stairs and the bathroom. Tell the therapist about dizziness, a recent near-fall, or pain after exercise. Regular practice helps the movements become familiar, while rest between sessions allows you to recover.

When to seek care

After a fall, seek prompt assessment if you have new hip, back, wrist, or ankle pain, cannot put weight through a limb, or notice a change in shape or function. Get urgent help after a head impact with confusion, repeated vomiting, worsening headache, or unusual sleepiness. Stop an exercise and contact the team for sudden severe pain, new weakness, or fainting.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which movements are suitable after a fracture, whether your walking aid fits correctly, how to modify exercises for back pain, and who should review dizziness or medicine-related unsteadiness.
