What to expect from a facelift for sun-damaged skin

Sun exposure can leave skin with uneven colour, fine lines, roughness, and reduced elasticity. A facelift is designed mainly for sagging tissue and loose skin, such as lax cheeks, jowls, or a loose jawline. It does not resurface the outer skin layer or correct every mark caused by ultraviolet exposure. Your clinician may assess skin texture and pigment separately and discuss whether a skin-focused treatment belongs in the plan. Good skin protection remains useful before and after surgery.

Bring a full list of medicines and skincare products to the consultation, including treatments that can irritate or thin the skin. Tell the surgeon about smoking or vaping, previous procedures, and any difficulty healing. After surgery, expect swelling, bruising, tightness, and areas of numbness to settle in stages. Keep incisions clean as instructed, sleep in the recommended position, avoid picking crusts, and protect healing skin from direct sun. Use only the products and sunscreen your team approves. Return to exercise, heat exposure, and cosmetic procedures only when cleared.

Call the surgical team for increasing redness, worsening rather than settling pain, fever, foul or pus-like drainage, persistent bleeding, rapidly growing swelling, or an incision that separates. Urgent care is needed for breathing difficulty, chest pain, collapse, or sudden neurological symptoms. A new colour change or severe pain in the skin should also be reported promptly because the team may need to examine blood flow and wound healing.

Ask which signs of photoageing the facelift will address, which concerns need a separate skin treatment, how sun exposure affects incision care, and what skincare can be restarted during healing. Ask how the surgeon will balance tightening with a natural facial movement and how follow-up will assess both the contour and the skin surface.
