What to expect from excisional surgery for xanthelasma

Xanthelasma consists of yellowish deposits in eyelid skin, often near the inner corners. Because eyelid skin is thin and mobile, the clinician plans the removal and closure with attention to the crease, eyelid movement, and nearby eye structures. Local anaesthetic may be used. The deposit is removed through a small incision and the skin is closed or dressed. The area can look swollen, bruised, tight, or uneven while it settles. Excision changes the visible deposit but does not by itself explain why it formed.

Tell the clinician about eye conditions, contact lens use, allergies, medicines, and previous eyelid procedures. Follow instructions for cleaning and applying any prescribed product. Keep cosmetics and rubbing away from the incision until the team permits them. Sleep and activity advice may be adjusted to limit swelling.
