What to expect from an epidural steroid injection for a herniated disc

A herniated disc can irritate a nearby nerve and send pain, tingling, or altered sensation into an arm or leg. The injection places steroid medicine in the epidural space near the suspected source of inflammation. It can calm nerve irritation for some people, but it does not put the disc back into place or remove structural pressure.

Before treatment, the clinician checks your symptoms, scan findings, medicines, allergies, infection history, and bleeding risk. With the skin numbed and imaging used for guidance, you may feel pressure or brief discomfort. You are observed afterward and usually receive home-care instructions.

Tell the clinic about blood-thinning medicines, diabetes, pregnancy, allergies, and any current infection. Arrange a ride if sedation is planned. Follow instructions about food, medicines, and activity. Mild soreness can occur after the injection; use only the recommended pain relief and avoid strenuous lifting until advised.

Keep a simple record of nerve pain, numbness, sleep, walking or hand use, and any change in strength. This helps your clinician decide whether the injection helped and whether physiotherapy or another option should be considered.

Contact the clinic for persistent severe pain, fever, increasing swelling, redness, or drainage. Seek urgent care for new weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, severe headache, trouble breathing, fainting, or signs of an allergic reaction.

Ask what symptom the injection is intended to target, which spinal level is involved, how your medicines should be managed, what activity is allowed afterward, and what the next step will be if relief is limited.
