What to expect from an epidural steroid injection for cervical radiculopathy

Cervical radiculopathy occurs when a nerve leaving the neck becomes irritated or compressed, causing symptoms that can travel into the shoulder, arm, or hand. An epidural steroid injection places anti-inflammatory medicine near the affected nerve space; it does not repair a disc or widen a narrowed area.

The clinician reviews your symptoms, examination, scans, medicines, allergies, infection history, and bleeding risk. During the procedure you are positioned carefully, the skin is cleaned and numbed, and imaging helps guide the needle. Pressure or brief tingling can occur as the area is reached.

Give the clinic a complete medicine list and mention blood-thinning medicines, diabetes, pregnancy, allergies, or recent illness. Arrange transport if sedation is planned. Afterward, rest from strenuous activity for the period advised, but gentle movement is often encouraged. Track arm pain, pins and needles, strength, sleep, and function so the follow-up discussion is specific.

Relief may be gradual and varies between people. Temporary soreness or a short-lived increase in familiar symptoms can happen. Follow the written instructions about bathing, dressings, medicines, and returning to work or exercise.

Call the treating clinic for persistent severe pain, fever, increasing redness or drainage at the injection site, or symptoms that concern you. Seek emergency care for trouble breathing or swallowing, fainting, a severe new headache, new arm weakness, loss of coordination, or an allergic reaction.
