What to expect from endometrial ablation for adenomyosis

Endometrial ablation destroys or removes the lining inside the uterus. It is intended mainly for heavy menstrual bleeding in people who do not plan a future pregnancy. Adenomyosis can extend into the muscular wall, so ablation may not address deep pain or every source of bleeding.

The clinician first confirms that ablation is suitable and checks for causes of bleeding that need another approach. The method may use heat, cold, fluid, or another energy source. The treated lining heals over time, and bleeding patterns may change gradually rather than immediately.

Discuss contraception, pregnancy testing, medicines, and alternatives before the procedure. Pregnancy after ablation can be dangerous, so follow the recommended contraception plan. Cramping, watery or blood-stained discharge, nausea, and tiredness may occur afterward. Use the prescribed pain relief, keep follow-up appointments, and follow instructions about bathing, sex, tampons, and exertion.
