What to expect from emollient therapy for pityriasis alba

Pityriasis alba often causes pale, slightly dry or scaly patches on a child's face, especially the cheeks. An emollient smooths the surface and helps reduce flaking and tightness. It does not add pigment immediately, so the colour difference can remain visible after the texture feels better.

Sun exposure can make surrounding skin darker and increase the contrast with a pale patch. Gentle skin care and sun protection help reduce irritation and make the difference less noticeable as the skin gradually settles.

Apply a fragrance-free emollient to the patch after gentle washing, while the skin is slightly damp. Use light strokes rather than rubbing or scraping the scale. Reapply when the area feels dry, and avoid fragranced cosmetics, harsh cleansers and home bleaching products.

Use shade, protective clothing and child-appropriate sunscreen on exposed skin as advised. Do not assume every pale patch is pityriasis alba: note whether the edges are sharp, whether scale is present, and whether new areas are appearing. A clinician can examine the pattern and choose any additional treatment if inflammation is prominent.

Arrange an assessment if a patch is sharply white, rapidly enlarging, very itchy, painful, inflamed or associated with hair or eyelash colour change. Seek advice for patches on the eyelids or near the eyes, or when moisturising does not improve dryness. Prompt review is useful when the diagnosis is uncertain because several causes of lighter skin can appear similar.
