What to expect from emollient therapy for baby acne

Baby acne, also called neonatal acne, commonly appears as small red bumps or pustules on a young baby's cheeks, forehead or scalp. It often does not need active treatment. An emollient is useful when the surrounding skin is dry or irritated, but moisturising is not intended to scrub away the spots or speed every rash away.

A baby's skin is sensitive, so a simple fragrance-free product is preferable when one is needed. Thick oily products can feel protective on dry patches yet may trap heat or add to congestion around acne-like bumps. Use only a small amount and observe the skin.

Clean the face gently with lukewarm water and pat it dry. If the skin is dry, smooth a thin layer of a baby-suitable emollient onto the dry surrounding skin, keeping it away from the eyes and mouth. Do not squeeze the bumps, use adult acne medicines, or apply fragranced oils without a clinician's advice.

Wash hands before touching the area and launder fabrics that rub against the face with a mild, fragrance-free product. Keep a note of when the rash began and whether it followed a new product. A health professional can confirm the diagnosis if the appearance is uncertain, especially because several newborn rashes can look similar.

Contact a clinician promptly if the baby has fever, seems unusually sleepy or unwell, feeds poorly, develops blisters, widespread peeling, purple spots, marked swelling or pus. Seek advice if the rash is rapidly worsening, involves the eyes, or persists in a way that does not match the expected course. Stop a new product if it causes swelling, intense redness or breathing symptoms and seek urgent help for breathing difficulty.
