What to expect from emollient therapy for cracked heels

How the structures involved in Cracked Heels differ from normal

Short answer

Expect emollient therapy to hydrate thick heel skin, soften rough edges, and support repair of superficial cracks while reducing further splitting.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main aim
Hydrate and soften heel skin so cracks can repair
Helpful habit
Apply after washing and cover with a clean sock
Protect
Use supportive footwear and avoid hard-surface barefoot walking

Why heels crack

Cracked heels develop when dry, thickened skin cannot flex comfortably under pressure. An emollient restores some flexibility and reduces water loss, so the edges of a fissure are less likely to catch and split further. It does not correct every cause, such as prolonged standing, open-backed footwear, eczema, psoriasis, or a fungal infection.

You may first notice less tightness and smoother skin around the crack. Deeper fissures can take longer to close and may hurt when standing or walking, especially if they reach living skin.

A simple heel routine

After washing, pat the feet dry and apply a thick emollient to the heels while the skin remains slightly damp. Covering the heel with a clean cotton sock can help keep the product in place overnight. Choose supportive, closed footwear that limits heel slippage, and avoid walking barefoot on hard surfaces. Do not cut away thick skin or use a file over an open, bleeding, or painful fissure. Keep the spaces between the toes dry. People with diabetes or reduced sensation should ask a clinician before treating cracks at home.

When to seek care

Get medical advice if a crack is deep, bleeding, increasingly painful, red, warm, swollen, or draining, or if you develop fever. Seek prompt assessment for any foot wound when diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced sensation is present. If heel fissures keep returning despite moisturising and suitable footwear, ask about skin conditions or infection that may need targeted treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which emollient is appropriate for the thickness of your heel skin, whether a fissure needs a dressing, and how to manage work footwear or prolonged standing. Mention itching, scaling elsewhere on the feet, recurrent cracks, diabetes, or circulation problems.

Questions people ask

Can emollient therapy close a deep heel fissure?

It can support the skin barrier, but a deep or painful fissure may need dressing, infection assessment, or another treatment.

Should you apply emollient between the toes?

Keep toe spaces dry unless a clinician specifically advises application there, because trapped moisture can cause problems.
