The surgeon removes damaged parts of the elbow and places components that recreate the joint hinge. The operation may involve the tissues around the joint, so swelling, bruising and stiffness are expected early features. A dressing supports the wound, and the arm may rest in a splint before gentle motion begins. The implant is designed to improve pain and function, but the new elbow needs protection from heavy or repetitive loading while the tissues recover.

Keep the incision protected and follow instructions for bathing, wound checks and pain medicine. Elevate the arm and move the hand, wrist and shoulder as advised to limit stiffness. Physiotherapy gradually works on elbow motion, control and useful tasks. Your surgeon will give a lifting limit; avoid using the replaced arm for forceful pushing, pulling or heavy carrying unless specifically cleared. Plan help at home, and arrange transport until you can safely control the vehicle.

Report fever, increasing wound redness, drainage, worsening swelling, new clicking with loss of function, or pain that is becoming stronger rather than settling. Seek urgent help for sudden loss of hand circulation, rapidly increasing weakness or numbness, heavy bleeding, chest pain or difficulty breathing.
