What to expect from elbow arthroscopy for elbow osteoarthritis

The surgeon inserts a camera and slim instruments through small portals around the elbow. Depending on the joint findings, they may remove loose fragments, smooth irritated tissue or release stiffness. Arthroscopy can address selected mechanical problems but may not reverse established cartilage wear. Anaesthesia and a temporary dressing are arranged for the procedure. The elbow commonly feels swollen and stiff afterward, and the hand or forearm may feel different until the anaesthetic wears off.

Keep the arm elevated when swelling is present and move the fingers and wrist as instructed. Protect the portal dressings from water until told otherwise, and use prescribed pain relief according to directions. Early, controlled elbow motion is often central to preventing stiffness, but lifting and pushing are restricted until healing allows them. Physiotherapy may progress from gentle range-of-motion work to strength and function. Arrange help with meals, dressing or transport if your dominant arm is treated.

Call the surgical team for increasing redness, warmth, discharge, fever, worsening swelling or pain that is not controlled. Get urgent medical help for a cold or blue hand, persistent new numbness, inability to move the fingers, severe bleeding, chest pain or breathing difficulty.

Ask which arthritis-related finding is being treated, how soon motion should begin, what lifting limit applies, and when driving or work may resume. Ask what symptoms would suggest that another treatment is needed if arthroscopy cannot relieve the main restriction.
