What to expect from diabetes screening for prediabetes

Screening may use a blood test that reflects glucose over time or a test taken after a period without food. Your clinician will tell you which test is planned and whether preparation is needed. A result in the prediabetes range means glucose is higher than expected but does not meet the definition of diabetes. It may not cause noticeable symptoms. The result should be interpreted with your medical history, medicines, pregnancy status when relevant, and any repeat testing recommended.

Before the appointment, check whether you should fast and bring your medicine list. Tell the clinician about recent illness, steroid treatment, and family history of diabetes. If prediabetes is confirmed, discuss food choices, activity that suits your health, sleep, weight goals if relevant, and a plan to monitor glucose. Small practical changes can be reviewed over time. Do not stop prescribed medicines because of a screening result.

Arrange prompt medical advice for marked thirst, frequent urination, vomiting, unexplained weight loss, blurred vision, unusual drowsiness, or worsening weakness. Emergency help is needed for confusion, fainting, severe dehydration, or difficulty breathing. These symptoms should not wait for a routine screening appointment.
