What to expect from diabetes screening for erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction can have several contributing factors, including blood-vessel, nerve, hormone, medicine, emotional and relationship factors. Diabetes can affect blood vessels and nerves involved in an erection, so a clinician may include diabetes screening in a broader assessment. Screening does not by itself explain every erection problem.

The appointment may cover when the difficulty began, whether it occurs in every situation, sexual desire, erections during sleep, medicines, smoking, alcohol, stress and other health conditions. A clinician may check blood pressure, pulses and other relevant findings, with consent and privacy.

Bring a list of medicines and supplements, describe any changes in erections honestly, and mention thirst, frequent urination, tiredness or unintentional weight change. Ask whether the blood test requires fasting and how results will be shared. You can request a chaperone or ask questions about each examination before it begins.

Do not stop prescribed medicine before testing unless instructed. Keep a note of symptoms and timing, including whether problems began after a new medicine or health change.

Arrange a routine appointment for persistent or recurring erectile difficulties, especially if they are affecting your wellbeing. Seek urgent care for chest pain, severe shortness of breath, sudden weakness, or an erection lasting several hours with significant pain. Prompt assessment is also sensible for sudden neurological symptoms or severe genital injury.
