De Quervain's tenosynovitis irritates the tendons that move the thumb through a narrow covering near the wrist. During a release, the surgeon makes a small incision and opens that covering so the tendons can glide with less restriction. The hand is usually protected with a dressing afterward. Soreness, swelling, and tenderness around the incision are expected during early healing, while the final pace depends on the wound, tendon irritation, and your work or caring demands.

Keep the dressing and incision clean and follow the surgical team's instructions about bathing, elevation, and thumb movement. Gentle motion is often encouraged when permitted to reduce stiffness, but lifting, forceful gripping, and repetitive thumb use should wait until cleared. Do not pick at the wound or remove sutures yourself. Once the incision has healed, scar care and hand therapy may improve comfort and movement. Arrange practical help for tasks that require strong pinching during the early period.

Call promptly for increasing redness, warmth, drainage, fever, spreading swelling, or pain that is becoming harder to control. Seek urgent care for sudden loss of thumb movement, severe bleeding that does not stop with pressure, or a hand that becomes cold, pale, or blue. Persistent tingling or marked sensitivity around the scar also deserves review.
