What to expect from custom orthotics for high-arched feet

A high arch may leave less of the sole in contact with the ground, concentrating force at the heel and ball of the foot. It can also affect ankle stability and contribute to calluses or fatigue. The orthotic is selected around your pressure pattern, flexibility, balance and footwear. Its role is to improve load sharing and comfort, not to flatten the arch.

Wear the device for short periods at first, preferably in a supportive shoe with enough depth. Check your heel, arch and forefoot for rubbing or pressure after each trial. Do not continue through sharp pain, numbness or a new feeling of instability. A clinician can change cushioning, contour or support when your symptoms show that the fit is not right.

Book a review if pain continues, balance worsens, or calluses, blisters or skin breaks develop. Seek prompt attention for new weakness, loss of sensation, a hot swollen foot, or sudden inability to bear weight. High arches with progressive weakness or changing balance may also need assessment beyond footwear support.
