What to expect from custom orthotics for heel spur

A heel spur is a bony growth, but pain can also involve irritated soft tissues around the heel. The assessment may consider where you hurt, how you walk, your arch and the shoes you use. A device may use cushioning or a relieved area under the heel and may support the foot so load is shared more evenly. It does not dissolve the bony growth.

Begin with short periods in stable, well-fitting shoes and increase use as comfort allows. Avoid placing an insert in a shoe that leaves your heel cramped or unstable. Compare symptoms during standing and walking, and look for new pressure under the arch or forefoot. Ask for an adjustment if the heel cup slips or the cushion feels too hard.

Arrange a clinical review if heel pain persists, spreads, or limits normal walking despite a good fit. Prompt care is needed for sudden severe pain, marked swelling, warmth, colour change, numbness or pain after a significant injury. Heel pain can have causes that need treatment alongside an orthotic.
