What to expect from custom orthotics for hallux rigidus

Short answer
Custom orthotics for hallux rigidus are designed to limit painful big-toe bending, spread forefoot pressure and make walking more comfortable.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main aim
- Reduce painful bending and push-off stress at the big-toe joint.
- Footwear
- Roomy shoes with a supportive or firm sole may help the fit.
What the device is doing
Hallux rigidus affects the joint at the base of the big toe and can make push-off painful. A rigid or reinforced area beneath the forefoot may reduce how far the toe bends inside the shoe. Padding can also reduce direct pressure. The orthotic manages forces while you walk; it does not remove joint stiffness or reverse established joint changes.
Getting used to it
Use the orthotic first for brief walks in a roomy, supportive shoe. Avoid forcing the toe through pain while your footwear is being adjusted. Notice whether the big-toe joint feels less loaded and whether pressure moves elsewhere. Return for a review if the device crowds the toes, lifts your heel or creates discomfort under another part of the foot.
When to seek care
Contact a clinician if joint pain remains limiting despite a suitable fit, or if rubbing, swelling or numbness develops. Prompt assessment is appropriate for a red, hot, rapidly swollen joint, a new injury, or inability to bear weight, because these features can need care beyond orthotic adjustment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the goal is to limit toe motion or reduce pressure, which shoe sole works best, how to increase wear, and what symptoms mean the device needs modification.
