What to expect from custom orthotics for flat feet

Flat feet can change how the heel, arch and ankle move when you stand or walk. An assessment may include your symptoms, footwear, walking pattern and foot position. The device may provide arch contact, guide load across the sole and cushion sensitive areas. It supports comfort and function; it does not permanently reshape an adult foot.

Start with short periods in suitable shoes, then increase wear as your feet adapt. Check for rubbing, pressure points, new pain or numbness. Bring the shoes you use most often so the fit can be considered. A clinician may adjust the shell, padding or support if the device feels intrusive or your symptoms do not settle.

Arrange a review if pain keeps worsening, a sore spot or blister develops, or the orthotic changes your walking noticeably. Seek prompt medical attention for a suddenly swollen, hot or discoloured foot, marked weakness, or loss of feeling. Persistent symptoms may need assessment for another foot, ankle or nerve problem.
