What to expect from a CT scan for a lung nodule

A CT scan uses X-rays and computer processing to create detailed cross-sectional images of the chest. It can show a nodule's size, shape, position, density, and relationship to nearby structures. A lung nodule can have several causes, and a CT image alone does not always identify the cause. The radiologist compares earlier images when available and describes features that help the treating team choose observation, another scan, or tissue sampling.

Tell the imaging team about pregnancy, allergies, kidney problems, and previous reactions to contrast. Some scans use contrast through a vein and may require specific food or drink instructions; follow the appointment guidance. Remove metal objects and lie still while the table moves through the scanner. The technologist may ask you to hold your breath briefly. After contrast, follow the team's hydration and medication advice, and ask when the report will be reviewed.

A CT scan does not usually require recovery, but seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, widespread rash, or severe weakness after contrast. Contact your clinician promptly if the lung symptom that led to imaging suddenly worsens, especially with chest pain or coughing blood.

Ask whether contrast is needed, if older scans will be compared, what features were seen, when the radiology report will be explained, and what follow-up would be considered if the nodule remains unchanged or develops new features.
