What to expect from cryotherapy for warts

The clinician identifies the wart and may trim thick surface skin before applying cold spray or a probe. Expect a strong cold sensation, stinging and soreness that can continue after the visit. The treated area may become red, swollen or blistered, then develop a crust. The damaged wart tissue separates as healthy skin grows underneath.

Warts can occur on the hands, fingers, elbows, knees or other areas, and location changes how much rubbing affects recovery. A wart may not clear after one visit, particularly when it is thick or longstanding. Freezing the visible lesion does not guarantee that another wart will not develop nearby.

Follow the clinic’s instructions for cleaning and covering the spot. Keep the blister or crust intact, and wash your hands before touching the area. If the blister breaks, rinse gently and replace the recommended dressing. Avoid picking, shaving across the site, sharing towels or nail tools, and applying over-the-counter wart products unless the clinician has approved them for the healing skin.

Contact the treating clinician if pain increases, redness spreads, swelling becomes pronounced, or drainage is thick, foul-smelling or ongoing. Seek prompt medical advice for fever, red streaks or a wound that is difficult to use because of pain. Have a changing, bleeding or uncertain growth assessed rather than repeatedly freezing it yourself.
