What to expect from cryotherapy for genital warts

The clinician applies cold treatment to the wart and nearby margins while protecting surrounding skin as much as possible. Genital skin can be sensitive, so you may feel a sharp cold sensation, burning, or cramping. Treated warts can swell, blister, ooze lightly, or form a crust before the area improves.

Cryotherapy removes visible warts but does not promise that the virus has left the body. New warts can appear, and follow-up may be needed. Treatment should be planned for the exact location, number, and size of the warts.

Wash gently, pat dry, and follow any dressing instructions. Wear loose, breathable clothing to reduce friction. Avoid picking, shaving over, or irritating the treated skin until it has healed. Ask when sexual contact, swimming, and exercise can safely resume, because an open blister or sore can be uncomfortable and may increase transmission concerns. Use recommended pain relief rather than applying household products.

Contact the clinic if pain, swelling, warmth, or discharge is worsening, or if you develop fever or difficulty passing urine. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, rapidly spreading swelling, or severe pain. Arrange review if a wart remains, returns, or the diagnosis becomes uncertain.

Ask how many sessions may be needed, how to protect nearby skin, when intimacy is safe, whether partners need assessment, and how recurrence or other sexually transmitted infections will be addressed.
