What to expect from cryotherapy for Bowen's disease

Bowen's disease, also called squamous cell carcinoma in situ, affects the top layer of skin. A clinician directs very cold treatment at the confirmed patch. You may feel intense cold, stinging, or aching while the area is treated. The skin can become red, swollen, blistered, or crusted afterward. The treated area may look more noticeable before it settles.

Cryotherapy targets the visible lesion; it does not automatically assess every change elsewhere on the skin. Follow-up helps the clinician check whether the area has healed as expected and whether further treatment or a different approach is needed.

Keep the area clean and follow the dressing instructions you receive. Do not pick a blister or crust, because removing it can delay healing. Protect the site from rubbing and sun while the surface repairs. Use only the pain relief or ointment recommended for you, especially if the lesion is near the eye or on delicate skin. Attend the planned review even if the surface looks better.

Contact the clinic if redness, warmth, swelling, or pain keeps increasing, if drainage develops, or if you feel unwell. Seek prompt advice for bleeding that does not stop with gentle pressure. Arrange review if the patch does not heal, returns, or develops a new thickened or ulcerated area.
