What to expect from cryolipolysis for submental fullness

The clinician assesses whether fullness beneath the chin is mainly a suitable fat pad and checks the skin and neck profile. A small cooling applicator is placed under the chin, sometimes with gentle suction. Intense cold, tugging, pressure, tingling, or aching can occur at the start; numbness often follows as the area cools.

Afterward, the underside of the chin and upper neck may be swollen, firm, bruised, tender, or numb. These changes can make the area look temporarily fuller. The intended contour change is gradual. Cryolipolysis does not correct fullness caused mainly by loose skin, muscle position, or another neck problem.

Tell the clinician about cold sensitivity, nerve symptoms, skin conditions, prior chin or neck procedures, and any swelling or lumps that have not been assessed. Follow instructions about medicines and products before the appointment. Afterward, keep the skin protected, use only advised comfort measures, and resume usual activities according to how the area feels.

Avoid pressing, rubbing, or applying heat or cold packs unless the clinic specifically advises it. Keep follow-up appointments so swelling has time to settle before the contour is judged. If the assessment shows a different cause of fullness, another treatment approach may be more suitable.

Contact the clinic if swelling or pain is increasing, the skin blisters, sensation becomes very troubling, or the treated area develops an unusual colour or expanding firmness. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swallowing, or speaking, rapidly increasing neck swelling, or signs of a serious allergic reaction.

Ask whether the fullness is suitable for cooling, how skin laxity may influence the profile, and which applicator will fit the area. Clarify expected swelling and numbness, activity and sleeping advice, follow-up timing, alternative treatments, and which neck symptoms should be reported immediately.
