What to expect from a cortisone injection for tarsal tunnel syndrome

The injection is usually placed near the tarsal tunnel at the inner ankle. A local anaesthetic may numb the area briefly, while cortisone is intended to settle irritation around the tibial nerve. It does not enlarge the tunnel or repair a structural source of pressure. Temporary numbness, pressure or soreness can occur after the procedure. Nerve symptoms such as tingling or burning may improve gradually rather than immediately.

Tell the clinician about diabetes, blood-thinning medicine, allergies, infection near the ankle or previous reactions to injections. Arrange sensible footwear and avoid strenuous walking until the ankle feels settled. Follow the specific instructions given for dressing care and activity. A short period of post-injection soreness is possible; use only pain relief that is suitable for you. Keep track of changes in pain, tingling, sensation and walking so the follow-up assessment can judge the response.

Contact the treating service promptly if redness, warmth, swelling or drainage develops at the injection site, or if pain is steadily worsening. Seek urgent medical help for new marked weakness, rapidly spreading numbness, severe swelling, trouble breathing or signs of a serious allergic reaction. Persistent symptoms do not necessarily mean the injection caused harm, but they do need reassessment and may call for another treatment plan.

Ask where the injection will be placed, whether imaging guidance is planned, what improvement would count as a useful response, and how long to modify walking or exercise. Also ask how diabetes or blood-thinning treatment changes preparation, and what the next option would be if nerve symptoms remain.
