What to expect from a cortisone injection for shoulder impingement

Shoulder impingement describes pain linked to tissues being irritated as the arm moves, particularly with reaching overhead. A cortisone injection is usually directed toward the inflamed space around the rotator cuff. It may quiet local inflammation, but it does not permanently change the shoulder's shape or replace movement retraining.

The clinician will review your examination and may use imaging or another assessment when needed. A temporary increase in soreness can follow the injection. Relief varies, and the purpose is often to make a rehabilitation programme more tolerable.

Tell the clinician about diabetes, allergies, blood thinners and infection symptoms before treatment. Rest the shoulder from demanding tasks for the advised period, then keep it moving gently. Avoid repeatedly testing painful overhead ranges just because the shoulder feels better for a while.

A physiotherapist may work on shoulder blade control, range of motion and gradual cuff strength. Break up repetitive reaching and adjust lifting technique. Progress by response over time, rather than making a sudden jump in activity.

Contact a clinician promptly if the injection area becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen or starts draining, or if fever accompanies worsening pain. Seek urgent help for sudden loss of arm function, new severe numbness or weakness, breathing trouble, facial swelling or other signs of a serious allergic response.

Ask where the injection will be placed, which movements to limit, when physiotherapy should begin, and how progress will be judged. Ask what findings would suggest another shoulder problem if pain persists despite treatment.
