What to expect from the combined pill for endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue similar to the womb lining grows outside the womb and can contribute to pelvic pain, painful periods or pain during sex. The combined pill contains oestrogen and progestogen. Taken in a cyclic or continuous pattern, it can suppress ovulation and reduce the hormonal changes that drive bleeding. Some people have less pain or lighter, less frequent bleeding; others need a different treatment or additional pain support.

Spotting, breast tenderness, nausea, headache or mood changes may occur, especially while your body adjusts. Continuous use can cause irregular bleeding at first. The pill manages symptoms but does not remove endometriosis tissue, so symptom response and health history guide ongoing treatment.

Take each tablet as directed and ask what to do after a missed pill or vomiting. Tell your prescriber if you smoke, have migraine with aura, high blood pressure, a history of blood clots, liver disease or take medicines that may interact. Do not stop a prescribed course without discussing another plan. Record pain, bleeding and side effects so the next review can focus on whether the regimen is helping.

Get urgent help for sudden chest pain, difficulty breathing, coughing blood, one-sided leg swelling or pain, sudden weakness, or a severe new headache with vision or speech changes. Contact your prescriber for persistent troublesome bleeding, severe abdominal pain, jaundice or a major mood change. Seek review if endometriosis pain continues to limit daily activities despite treatment.
