What to expect from bowel resection for bowel cancer

The surgeon removes the bowel section containing the tumour and may remove nearby lymph nodes for laboratory examination. The remaining bowel may be joined together. Sometimes a temporary or longer-term stoma is needed, allowing stool to leave through an opening in the abdomen into a pouch. The approach may be open or minimally invasive, depending on the tumour, your health, and the surgical plan.

After surgery, pain relief, fluids, movement, breathing exercises, and gradual return to eating are part of recovery. Bowel habits can change, including frequency, urgency, or stool consistency. Your team will explain wound care and whether further treatment is recommended after the laboratory results.

Ask which medicines to pause, when to stop eating and drinking, and how bowel preparation works if it is prescribed. Arrange transport and help at home. After discharge, walk regularly as advised, protect the incision, drink as directed, and increase food gradually. Keep follow-up appointments so the wound, bowel function, and pathology results can be reviewed.

If you have a stoma, a stoma nurse can teach pouch changes, skin protection, and signs of dehydration. Report ongoing difficulty eating, vomiting, or a sudden change in stoma output rather than waiting for the next appointment.

Contact the surgical team promptly for fever, increasing abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, wound redness or discharge, or very little or no bowel or stoma output. Seek emergency help for severe pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, or sudden breathing difficulty.
