What to Expect from Closed Reduction for Elbow Dislocation

The team checks the arm’s pulse, sensation and finger movement before and after treatment. Medication helps control pain and muscle spasm; some people receive sedation. The clinician guides the joint surfaces back into position, then uses imaging and examination to confirm stability. A sling or splint may limit movement for a short period. Associated fractures, ligament damage or an unstable joint can change the plan and may require specialist treatment or surgery.

Keep the arm supported exactly as instructed and elevate it to help swelling. Move the fingers and shoulder if permitted, but do not force the elbow or lean on that arm. Take prescribed pain relief as directed and keep follow-up appointments. Once the clinician allows it, guided exercises help restore movement while protecting healing tissues. Avoid driving, lifting and sport until strength, stability and reaction time have been assessed.

Get urgent help for a cold, pale or blue hand, increasing swelling, new numbness, inability to move the fingers, severe pain that is not controlled or a splint that feels dangerously tight. Return promptly after a fall or impact, especially if the elbow looks deformed again. Fever, drainage or worsening redness around a wound also needs medical review.
