Blood pressure may be measured more than once while you are seated, with attention to the cuff size and your position. Bring home readings if you have them, including when they were taken and whether you had symptoms. Your clinician may ask about headaches, dizziness, chest discomfort, breathlessness and vision changes, while also reviewing diabetes, kidney health and cholesterol.

The medicine review includes missed doses, side effects, timing and products such as decongestants or anti-inflammatory pain relievers. Discussion may include salt, alcohol, activity, sleep, smoking and weight, with goals that fit your routine. Further blood or urine checks may be arranged.

Bring your monitor if you are unsure whether it is being used correctly, plus all medicines and supplements. Take readings according to your care plan rather than repeatedly checking because of one anxious result. Note dizziness after tablets, ankle swelling or problems remembering doses so the plan can be adjusted.

Seek urgent help for very high blood pressure accompanied by chest pain, severe breathlessness, new weakness, difficulty speaking, confusion or sudden vision loss. A severe unusual headache with neurological symptoms also needs urgent assessment. Do not wait for a routine review when these warning signs appear.
