What to Expect from Chiropractic Adjustment for Non-Specific Low Back Pain

Short answer
Expect a history and movement assessment, hands-on treatment selected for your back, and advice to stay gently active while symptoms are monitored.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Assessment first
- The practitioner checks symptoms and nerve function before choosing a technique.
- After treatment
- Keep moving gently and monitor both back and leg symptoms.
What an adjustment involves
Non-specific low back pain means pain without a confirmed single structural cause after appropriate assessment. A chiropractor should ask about the onset, leg symptoms, health history and daily activities, then check movement, strength and sensation. An adjustment may use a controlled hand thrust or an instrument to move a spinal joint; treatment can also include mobilisation, soft-tissue work or exercise advice.
You may feel pressure, stretching or a brief click. Temporary soreness can occur afterward. Tell the practitioner if a technique causes sharp pain, new tingling or symptoms down the leg. Treatment should be adapted or stopped when findings suggest that another medical assessment is needed.
Getting the most from care
Bring a list of medicines and explain previous back problems, osteoporosis, recent injury, surgery, pregnancy or conditions affecting nerves and blood clotting. Wear comfortable clothing and describe what makes the pain better or worse. Ask what the proposed technique is intended to change and what alternatives are available.
After treatment, gentle walking and ordinary movement are often more useful than prolonged bed rest. Follow the exercise and activity plan, use heat or cold only as advised, and record changes in pain, sleep, walking and leg symptoms. Review the plan if symptoms are not improving, keep returning, or interfere with work and daily tasks.
When to seek urgent care
Seek emergency care for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the inner thighs or genitals, rapidly worsening leg weakness, or severe back pain after major injury. Get prompt medical advice for fever, unexplained weight loss, a history of cancer, or pain that is progressively worsening, especially with night symptoms.
Questions to ask
Ask what findings support non-specific low back pain, which treatment is planned, what response should be expected, and when the plan will be reviewed. Ask which symptoms mean manipulation should stop and whether physiotherapy or medical assessment would better suit your needs.

Temporary soreness or stiffness can happen; tell the practitioner about severe, sharp or new radiating symptoms.
How many adjustments will I need?
The number depends on your response and the agreed review plan; ongoing treatment should have a clear purpose and reassessment.
