Short answer

Expect the clinician to assess breathing, oxygenation, feeding, hydration, and alertness, then explain supportive care and warning signs to watch.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Key observations
Breathing effort, oxygen level, feeding, hydration, and alertness
At home
Offer manageable feeds and keep smoke away from the child
Urgent change
Breathing pauses, colour change, or difficulty waking needs emergency help

The focus of the examination

The clinician may ask when cough, runny nose, fever, wheezing, or feeding difficulty began and whether symptoms are changing. They may watch your child breathe, listen to the chest, check colour and alertness, measure oxygen level, and assess hydration. Most care is guided by how the child is breathing and feeding rather than by a test result alone; some children need observation or hospital support.

Care between reviews

Offer smaller, more frequent feeds if congestion makes feeding tiring, and clear the nose gently as advised. Keep smoke and strong fragrances away from the child, encourage rest, and use only medicines recommended for their age and situation. Wash hands before touching the child, avoid sharing items, and limit contact with vulnerable household members while the child is unwell.

Breathing warning signs

Seek emergency help if your child has pauses in breathing, blue or grey lips, severe struggle to breathe, grunting, or is difficult to wake. Get urgent advice if ribs pull in with breaths, breathing becomes much faster, feeds are repeatedly interrupted, urine is reduced, or your child is becoming less responsive. Infants born early or children with heart, lung, or immune problems may need earlier assessment.

What to ask

Ask how to recognise increased work of breathing, how to support feeds, whether oxygen or review is needed, and how soon to seek help if symptoms change.

Questions people ask

Will an antiviral medicine be prescribed?

Care is often supportive, but the clinician decides whether any treatment or monitoring is needed from the child’s examination and risk factors.

How can I tell if feeding is becoming unsafe?

Seek advice when coughing or breathlessness repeatedly interrupts feeds, your child takes much less than usual, or wet nappies become less frequent.
