What to Expect from a Child Health Consultation for Bronchiolitis

The clinician will ask when the cough, blocked nose, noisy breathing, or feeding difficulty began. They may watch your child’s breathing, count breaths, listen to the chest, and check skin colour, alertness, and signs of dehydration.

The assessment helps distinguish mild illness from breathing distress. Bronchiolitis is often managed with fluids, rest, and careful observation; antibiotics do not treat the viral cause. A clinician may recommend monitoring rather than a routine medicine.

Offer smaller, more frequent feeds if breathing makes feeding tiring. Keep the nose clear as advised, avoid tobacco smoke, and let your child rest. Record wet nappies, feeds, breathing changes, and periods of alertness so you can describe progress.
