What to Expect from a Chest X-Ray for Tuberculosis

You will stand or sit against the X-ray equipment while the radiographer positions your chest. You may be asked to hold your breath briefly while the image is taken. Metal objects and clothing around the chest may need to be removed.

The image can show areas of inflammation, scarring, fluid, or other changes in the lungs. A chest X-ray cannot by itself confirm or exclude tuberculosis. A clinician may compare it with your symptoms and arrange sputum testing or other assessments.

Tell the radiographer if you could be pregnant, and mention any difficulty standing or holding your breath. Bring details of symptoms, previous lung problems, and medicines to the appointment.

After the image, follow the clinician’s plan even if you feel well. If tuberculosis is suspected, ask how to reduce close contact with others until testing clarifies the situation and whether additional samples are needed.

Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, coughing up blood, new confusion, fainting, or a blue or grey colour around the lips. Contact a clinician promptly for a persistent cough, fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, or worsening tiredness.

Ask what the X-ray shows, whether sputum or other tests are needed, when results will be available, and what precautions are appropriate while tuberculosis is being assessed.
