What to expect from chemotherapy for liver metastases

Liver metastases are cancer deposits that began in another part of the body. The chemotherapy chosen is usually guided by that original cancer, previous treatments, the amount and position of spread, and how well the liver is working. Treatment may aim to shrink or slow the cancer, ease symptoms or maintain control, and may be combined with targeted therapy, immunotherapy, surgery or a liver-directed procedure.

Visits commonly include blood tests to assess liver function and blood counts, a review of appetite, pain, bowel changes and energy, and medicines to prevent nausea. Possible effects include tiredness, nausea, diarrhoea or constipation, mouth soreness, taste changes and reduced blood counts. Liver-related symptoms can also change as the disease or treatment changes.

Keep a record of pain, nausea, bowel movements, food and fluid intake, and any yellowing of the skin or eyes. Take prescribed medicines as directed and check before using paracetamol, herbal products or supplements because the liver processes many medicines. Eat small meals if needed, accept help with practical tasks and attend every blood test or scan arranged by your team.

Contact your oncology team promptly for fever, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, severe abdominal pain, new confusion, marked sleepiness, yellowing that is worsening, dark urine, pale stools, unusual bleeding or breathlessness. Seek emergency care for collapse, severe breathing difficulty, confusion that comes on suddenly or uncontrolled bleeding.
