What to expect from chemotherapy for adrenal cancer

Adrenal cancer treatment may use chemotherapy when the cancer has spread, returned, or needs medicine alongside another approach. The regimen can include more than one drug and may be given through a vein or by mouth. Your oncologist considers tumour behaviour, hormone production, previous treatment, organ function and your general health when choosing the plan.

Appointments may include blood tests, blood-pressure checks and discussions about appetite, weight, pain and hormone-related symptoms. Tiredness, nausea, reduced appetite, diarrhoea or constipation, mouth soreness and changes in blood counts can occur. Some adrenal tumours produce hormones, so the team may also adjust medicines that control hormone effects.

Take medicines exactly as prescribed and keep a record of doses and symptoms. Ask whether you should take anti-sickness medicine before symptoms begin. Eat small meals if appetite is low, drink according to your team’s advice and protect sore areas in your mouth. Arrange help on treatment days, and tell the team about herbal products, blood-pressure changes or new swelling.

Contact your care team promptly for fever, chills, persistent vomiting, severe diarrhoea, inability to drink, worsening weakness, unusual bleeding or a sudden change in blood pressure. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, chest pain, confusion or uncontrolled pain. If your tumour produces hormones, follow the specific emergency instructions given for hormone-related symptoms.
