What to expect from a chemical peel for perioral hyperpigmentation

Perioral hyperpigmentation means darker colour around the lips or mouth. It can follow irritation from saliva, lip licking, hair removal, cosmetics, toothpaste, eczema, or inflammation. The clinician should look for dryness, scaling, redness, or an active rash before treating colour, because a peel on inflamed skin may intensify the mark.

After cleansing, the selected solution is applied carefully while the lips and nearby sensitive skin are protected. Tingling, warmth, tightness, or brief stinging may occur. The area can look pink, dry, or temporarily darker before it settles. Because the mouth moves and is exposed to saliva and products, careful barrier care matters during recovery.

Tell the clinician about lip products, toothpaste, eczema, cold sores, allergies, recent waxing or threading, and any prescribed creams. Avoid treatment over cracked, sunburned, infected, or actively irritated skin. Follow instructions about pausing retinoids, acids, scrubs, and fragranced products.

Cleanse gently and use the recommended bland moisturiser after treatment. Keep saliva, licking, picking, and friction to a minimum, and avoid applying makeup or new products until the surface is comfortable. Protect the area from sunlight and use only the lip and facial products approved for healing skin. Do not pull away flakes.

Contact the clinic for intense burning, pronounced swelling, blisters, raw skin, or pain that worsens. Seek prompt medical advice if redness spreads, pus appears, fever develops, or grouped blisters suggest a cold sore. Persistent scaling or a sharply darker border may signal ongoing irritation and needs assessment before another peel.
