What to Expect from Chemical Peel for Acne Scars

A chemical peel uses a formulated solution to loosen surface skin cells and encourage a smoother-looking surface. It may help some shallow, uneven marks, but a peel cannot fill a deep ice-pick or rolling scar in the same way a procedure designed for deeper scar tissue might. Your clinician should first distinguish indented scars from lingering brown or red marks, because they can respond differently.

During treatment, you may feel warmth, tingling, or stinging. The skin can look pink or tight afterward, followed by flaking as the outer layer sheds. The depth and formula should be chosen for your skin type, scar pattern, and history of dark marks after irritation.

Share your current acne products, recent procedures, history of cold sores, and tendency to develop darker marks after inflammation. Follow the clinic’s instructions about pausing irritating products. Afterward, cleanse gently, use the recommended bland moisturiser, avoid picking flakes, and protect the area from sunlight with clothing or a suitable sunscreen. Do not add scrubs, strong acids, or retinoids until your clinician says the skin barrier is ready.

Plan treatment when you can allow the skin to settle without deliberate heat, friction, or intense exercise if those trigger irritation for you. Improvement is usually assessed after healing, and a clinician may recommend a series or a different scar treatment depending on the response.

Contact the treating clinic promptly if pain is worsening rather than easing, swelling is marked, blisters develop, or the skin becomes increasingly raw. Seek medical advice for pus, spreading warmth, fever, or a rapidly changing colour. New or persistent darkening also deserves review, especially if it follows significant irritation.

Ask which scar type is being treated, what depth of peel is planned, how long visible peeling may last, and which products should be paused. Also ask how your skin tone and history of post-inflammatory pigmentation affect the plan, and what alternative treatment would suit deeper scars.
