What to expect from cervical screening test for cervical ectropion

Cervical ectropion is a change in which delicate cells from inside the cervical canal are visible on the outer surface. These cells can bleed more easily when touched, including during screening. A clinician places a speculum into the vagina to see the cervix, then uses a soft sampling brush to collect cells. The sample is sent for laboratory testing.

You may feel pressure or a brief scratch, and you can ask the clinician to pause or use a smaller speculum. Ectropion itself does not make the screening sample impossible. The result is interpreted using the screening programme's process, rather than by appearance alone.

Tell the clinician about bleeding, discharge, pain, pregnancy, recent treatment or previous difficulty with examinations. Wear clothing that is easy to change and plan a little privacy afterward if you tend to spot. Light spotting can happen, but follow the service's advice if it continues. Attend follow-up even if ectropion has been seen before.

Seek medical advice for heavy or persistent bleeding after screening, severe pelvic pain, fever or unusual discharge. Arrange a separate assessment for bleeding after sex, bleeding between periods or new pelvic pain; screening checks cervical cells but does not explain every symptom.
