What to Expect from Cervical Fusion for Cervical Radiculopathy

Cervical radiculopathy is irritation or compression of a nerve root in the neck, which can cause pain, tingling, numbness or weakness along the arm. Cervical fusion usually involves removing the structure pressing on the nerve, placing a spacer or graft, and securing the treated vertebrae with implants. The operation may be approached from the front or back, depending on the anatomy and affected level.

Arm pain may settle sooner than numbness or weakness because nerves recover at different rates. Neck soreness, stiffness and swallowing discomfort can occur after surgery. Your team will check arm strength, sensation, the incision and movement before discharge.

Before the operation, discuss all medicines, allergies, smoking, dental problems and previous treatments. Arrange a ride home and help with shopping, meals and heavy tasks. Prepare a sleeping and working position that keeps your neck neutral, and follow the fasting and medicine instructions given by the hospital.

Walk regularly in short periods, avoid lifting and twisting until cleared, and take pain medicine only as directed. Do not use exercises from the internet without approval. Physiotherapy may restore posture, shoulder movement and arm strength while protecting the healing fusion. Driving, work and sport should resume in stages after the surgeon reviews your control and symptoms.

Contact the team for worsening arm weakness, spreading numbness, severe or increasing neck pain, fever, wound redness or drainage, or swallowing problems that are getting worse. Seek emergency care for breathing difficulty, sudden loss of strength, or new loss of bladder or bowel control.

Ask which nerve and spinal level are involved, what will be removed, which fusion device is planned, how long lifting restrictions last, and when physiotherapy, work and driving can restart. Ask how persistent numbness or weakness will be monitored.
