What to Expect from Cervical Fusion for Cervical Myelopathy

Cervical myelopathy occurs when the spinal cord is compressed in the neck. Cervical fusion may combine removal of pressure from the cord with joining adjacent vertebrae so the treated segment remains stable. The approach may be from the front or back of the neck, and implants or a bone graft may be used. Your scans, neurological examination and the levels involved determine the plan.

After anaesthesia, the team monitors strength, sensation, swallowing and breathing. Neck soreness, stiffness and temporary swallowing discomfort can occur, particularly after an operation from the front. Fusion develops gradually, so early symptoms and activity instructions need careful review rather than self-testing.

Give the surgeon a full medicine and health history, including blood thinners, diabetes, smoking and previous neck surgery. Plan transport and household help, keep frequently used items within easy reach, and ask whether a collar is required. Take only medicines approved by the surgical team.

In the early weeks, avoid lifting, sudden neck movements and driving until cleared. Walk for short, comfortable periods and increase activity in stages. Physiotherapy may address posture, safe transfers, balance, leg strength and hand coordination; the programme is adapted to the neurological problems you had before surgery. Keep every follow-up appointment so the wound, implants and fusion progress can be reviewed.

Call the surgical team urgently for new or worsening weakness, loss of coordination, trouble walking, increasing numbness, wound drainage, fever, or swallowing or breathing difficulty that is worsening. Emergency help is needed for severe breathing trouble, sudden paralysis, or loss of bladder or bowel control.

Ask which levels will be treated, whether decompression and fusion are both needed, whether a collar is planned, how lifting and driving limits will work, and which neurological changes should prompt an urgent call. Ask how recovery will be checked on examination and imaging.
