What to expect from carpal tunnel release for carpal tunnel syndrome

The median nerve passes through a narrow space at the wrist. In carpal tunnel syndrome, pressure there can cause tingling, numbness, burning, or weakness in the hand. Release surgery opens the space by cutting the constricting ligament; the nerve then needs time to recover. The operation may use a small incision or a camera-assisted approach, depending on the surgeon and your hand. Soreness at the palm, tightness when gripping, and sensitivity around the scar can occur early.

Keep the hand elevated when swollen, move the fingers as instructed, and protect the dressing and incision from moisture or pressure. Avoid forceful gripping, pushing, pulling, and heavy lifting until your surgeon clears them. Use the prescribed pain plan and attend wound and hand-function reviews. Nerve symptoms may improve at different speeds; long-standing numbness or weakness can take longer to change. Return to typing, driving, work, or sport should be based on control, comfort, wound healing, and task demands.

Contact the surgical team for increasing redness, warmth, discharge, wound opening, fever, or pain that is not settling. Seek urgent help for a cold or blue hand, severe swelling, new inability to move the fingers, or rapidly worsening numbness. Persistent or returning night symptoms should be discussed at follow-up rather than managed by increasing activity on your own.

Ask when to remove the dressing, which finger movements are encouraged, when driving and lifting are reasonable, and how persistent nerve symptoms will be assessed.
