Oral mucositis is inflammation and soreness of the mouth lining that can make chewing, swallowing and speaking difficult. Your team may inspect the mouth, ask about pain before and after meals, and check whether dryness, ulcers, bleeding or taste changes are limiting fluids and food. Relief can include a prescribed mouth treatment, pain medicine, gentle mouth care and advice about food texture and temperature. The aim is to make essential activities manageable while the underlying irritation settles.

Use only mouth rinses recommended by your care team, and follow the prescribed schedule rather than waiting until pain is severe. Choose soft, moist foods and sip fluids in a way that feels comfortable. Avoid tobacco, alcohol-containing mouth products and foods that sting or scrape. Tell the team if swallowing tablets becomes difficult; a different formulation may be possible. Do not pick at sores or use unapproved numbing products, which can affect swallowing safety.

Call your oncology team promptly if pain prevents drinking, urine becomes unusually dark or infrequent, mouth sores are worsening, or you notice bleeding that does not settle. Ask for urgent advice if you cannot swallow liquids, feel faint, develop fever or have breathing difficulty. These symptoms can require same-day assessment and supportive treatment.
