What to expect from caesarean section for placental abruption

Placental abruption happens when the placenta separates from the uterine wall before birth. It can cause abdominal or back pain, a firm tender uterus, contractions, and vaginal bleeding, although visible bleeding may not show the full amount of blood loss. The team assesses your vital signs, blood tests, fetal heart rate, and labour progress while deciding how quickly birth is needed.

If the baby needs prompt birth or vaginal delivery is not appropriate, caesarean surgery may be recommended. An anaesthetist works quickly to choose regional or general anaesthesia based on urgency, bleeding, clotting results, and your condition. Blood-loss preparation happens alongside these decisions.

If you have suspected abruption, do not drive yourself. Contact emergency maternity services, note when pain or bleeding began, and bring your medication information if it is safe to do so. In hospital, staff may place intravenous access, take blood samples, monitor the baby continuously, and involve newborn clinicians.

After birth, expect observation for bleeding, anaemia, blood-pressure changes, pain, wound problems, and clot symptoms. Take prescribed medicines, move with assistance, drink as advised, and ask for help with the baby while your strength returns. Emotional support may help after a frightening emergency.

During pregnancy, call emergency services or your maternity unit for vaginal bleeding, sudden abdominal or back pain, a tender or persistently hard uterus, regular contractions, faintness, or reduced fetal movement. After discharge, seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, collapse, severe pain, fever, breathing difficulty, chest pain, or a swollen painful leg.

Ask what was seen during surgery, how your blood tests are recovering, which medicines you need, what warning signs matter at home, how the birth may affect a future pregnancy, and where to find emotional or bereavement support if needed.
