What to expect from caesarean section for placenta praevia

Placenta praevia means the placenta lies low in the uterus and may cover or approach the cervix. As the cervix changes, bleeding can occur. Ultrasound helps locate the placenta and guide the timing and surgical approach. If there is bleeding, labour, or concern about the baby, admission and urgent delivery may be needed rather than waiting for a planned date.

Your team may arrange an anaesthetic review, blood tests, an intravenous line, and access to blood products. A regional anaesthetic is commonly considered when circumstances allow, but the anaesthetist will choose the safest option for your situation. The baby may be assessed by newborn staff after birth.

Follow advice about activity, intercourse, and when to attend hospital; restrictions vary with bleeding and placental position. Report any bleeding, contractions, pain, fluid leakage, or reduced movement rather than waiting for the next appointment. Pack medicines and important contact details in case admission is needed.

After surgery, expect checks of vaginal bleeding, blood count, wound, bladder, pain, and mobility. Rest, take prescribed medicines, and arrange help with lifting and household tasks. Keep follow-up appointments, especially if you had significant bleeding or an unplanned operation.

Any vaginal bleeding with known placenta praevia should be treated as urgent: contact your maternity unit and follow its instructions. Call emergency services for heavy bleeding, faintness, severe pain, or difficulty breathing. After discharge, seek help for heavy bleeding, fever, worsening wound redness or drainage, chest pain, or a painful swollen leg.

Ask where the placenta is in relation to the cervix, what symptoms mean immediate admission, when delivery is planned, which anaesthetic is likely, how bleeding will be managed, and whether a support person can attend.
