What to expect from bursa removal for olecranon bursitis

The olecranon bursa is a small cushioning sac over the bony point of the elbow. Repeated pressure, injury, or inflammation can make it swollen and persistent. During surgery, the surgeon removes the troublesome bursa and closes the skin. The arm may be dressed or supported, and early soreness, swelling, and limited bending are expected. The elbow may need time to form a new, healthy layer of tissue rather than immediately returning to pressure-bearing activities.

Keep the dressing clean and follow the instructions for bathing, wound checks, and medicines. Elevate the arm when swelling builds, move the fingers and shoulder, and perform only the elbow exercises you were given. Avoid leaning on the elbow, lifting heavily, or placing friction over the wound until your clinician permits it. Attend follow-up visits so healing and any stitches can be assessed. A gradual return to work or sport depends on wound condition, pain, strength, and the demands of the activity.

Contact your surgical team promptly for increasing redness, warmth, drainage, wound separation, fever, or pain that is worsening rather than settling. Seek urgent help for severe hand swelling, new numbness, pale or blue fingers, or difficulty moving the hand. A new fluid-filled swelling over the elbow also deserves review, especially after an impact or early return to pressure.

Ask which activities and sleeping positions are allowed, how to protect the incision, when elbow motion should begin, and what signs suggest infection or recurrent swelling.
